Falkland Scotland - Home To A Palace & Outlander Filming Location
Updated: Jan 19, 2023
To keep up with charming and enchanting cities, Falkland is definitely on that list. Not only is Falkland one of many Outlander filming locations but it was also a favorite place of one of the most famous (and my favorite) queens - Mary Queen Of Scots.
Falkland is most well known for Falkland Palace, it was once living quarters for the Stuart kings and queens as they hunted deer and wild boar in the forests of Fife. While Mary Queen of Scots was staying at this beautiful palace she also took up falconry. Falkland Palace was built between 1501 - 1541 by James IV and James V. The palace includes one of the only two 16th-century tennis courts (that you can still see today when visiting) and this is the oldest surviving tennis court in the world.
Falkland was considered a 'pleasure palace' because of the number of leisure activities available to the royals. Besides hunting, falconry, and tennis, there was an expanse of gardens with a wildflower meadow and orchard. One of my favorite parts of Falkland Palace was the Queen's room, it was arranged as Mary Queen Of Scots might have had and even had a replica of a dress that she might have worn during the time period.
The Palace did fall into disrepair in 1660 and the 3rd Marquess of Bute saved it from ruin in the 19th century. His labor and work are not lost on everyone who gets the chance to visit and tour the beauty of the palace. Bute's great-grandson still gets to enjoy it as keeper of this palace today.
Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed to be taken in the palace but I did get the chance to take a tour of the palace which is now preserved as a museum. Each room of the palace had the most intricate carvings, paintings, and tapestries that made you feel like you went back in time. You will also see what furniture looked like and how rooms were arranged at that time.
Apart from everything that Falkland Palace has to offer, the town played the city of Inverness in "Outlander". You will see Mrs. Baird's bed and breakfast and the Bruce Fountain where Jamie's ghost looked up at Claire in her room window in Season 1. In Season 2, one of the cellars in Falkland Palace was used as an apothecary room. I don't want to give anything away if you haven't watched the whole series but the cast does return in later seasons. All of which you can see in the video above.
Falkland had so much to offer with its magnificent palace and getting to see some of the (in my opinion) most important filming locations in the "Outlander" series. I highly recommend taking the time to go to Falkland if you get the chance. It's a must if you are in Scotland!
