How I Got My Husband To Watch Outlander

Updated: Feb 19, 2023

Since I was young I've wanted to travel and Scotland had been on my bucket list for a while. When I got older and shows like Reign and then definitely Outlander came out and featured Scotland I fell even more in love. They showed rolling hills, foggy days and beautiful castles.

When Garrett & I planned our trip to Europe, Scotland was at the top of both of our lists. So we started making an itinerary and finding tours on TripAdvisor, finding castles that we wanted to visit and looking into historical sites to find the best way for us to see Scotland in 3 days. Garrett was on Tripadvisor one night and he found an Outlander tour which takes a group of people to many of the different places/castles where the scenes took place and were filmed. So immediately upon seeing this I was hooked and I told Garrett this is something we have to absolutely do!

**Book your next trip to Edinburgh, Scotland with me on Booking.com.

A few months after he found this tour we were talking about what to watch during dinner one night and he mentioned Outlander. I said to him, "You don't really want to watch Outlander, it'll be too girly for you." He replied, "If we are doing this Outlander tour in Scotland, I'd like to know the importance of the places we are going." From that point on we started Outlander and now Garrett actually likes it (for the action scenes).

Outlander is probably my favorite tv show and now also a favorite book of mine. After watching and/or reading I'm sure many fans can agree that they would love to be transported for a day in Scotland and see the castles and world of Outlander. Which is exactly what Garrett and I were able to do. Seeing the places that mean so much to the story of Outlander and also knowing the historic significance was so amazing. I'm not lying when I say that I had a tear in my eye when I first saw Lallybroch, the home of Jamie Fraser!

The tour we took was with Rabbies Tours in Scotland, this tour was an all day tour that took us to:

  • Lallybroch (Midhope Castle)

  • Fort William (Blackness Castle)

  • Linlithgow Palace (Prison entrance and corridors)

  • Culross (Gellis's home, pillory)

  • Faulkland (Mrs. Bairds B&B, 1946 Inverness, Bruce Fountain)

We had a tour guide that took us around to all of these places and explained how they related to the show and their historic significance. Stay tuned for a brand new blog and video where I take you through our Outlander tour.

If you are looking to watch Outlander yourself, seasons 1 - 5 are on Netflix and season 6 is on the Starz streaming service with season 7 coming in the summer of this year (2023). We recently learned that Outlander was renewed for a final season, season 8. While I'm upset that this will be the end of the show, I am happy to still have the books from Diana Gabaldon. I'm also looking forward to the prequel of Outlander about Jamie Frasers parents.

If you are looking for something to watch or a new book series to follow then I highly recommend Outlander. I can't say that planning a trip to a filming location will make your husband or even wife watch a tv show/movie but I say it did work for me. If you are planning a trip to Scotland, I still recommend visiting these places just for the history alone!
