Our Surprise Hike At Abrams Falls
Updated: Mar 16, 2023
Many people take on hiking as their hobby, it's not my hobby but I like to go hiking every once in a while. Cade's Cove in Townsend, Tennessee is probably one of the best places to take a hike with its multiple hiking trails. Abrams Falls (located in Cades Cove) is a great hiking trail to take if you are looking for beauty in nature and want to see a waterfall as a reward at the end.
Abrams Falls is named after a Cherokee chief whose village was once located a several miles downstream. The falls is 20 feet high which isn't very tall for a waterfall but the amount of water rushing down makes up for it.

The trail to Abrams Falls is moderately difficult, there were narrow and rocky paths. I recommend getting an early start so you don't get stuck on the path at dark. I would also say to watch the weather, we went on a little bit of a rainy day in November and the path was a little slick with the leaf coverage, pine needles, and rainwater.

Garrett and I stopped at a stopping point in Cades Cove and we did some walking around, saw this cute little bridge, and decided to go on the trail. The sign said Abrams Falls and that the trail was 2.5 miles (we missed the other sign that said the hike would take 3-4 hours and that it is moderately difficult). That is 2.5 miles to the falls and 2.5 back to the parking lot so 5 miles in all... we didn't account for this in the beginning.
When we saw the initial sign, Garrett asked me if I was sure I wanted to go on the trail. I said, "It's only 2.5 miles. We can do it, no big deal!" We thought it was just a TRAIL, like a walking trail or path, not a trail that you hike. Keep in mind we were in no way prepared for a hike - had no snacks or water, or the right shoes or clothes!
We kept passing people that were way more prepared than us and the longer we went the more we understood that 2.5 miles isn't exactly a cakewalk... and the more we realized that this is a hiking trail. We had our moments on the trail realizing how unprepared we were but it's safe to say that the falls at the end was totally worth it. That's also the moment we realized that we needed to take the trail all the way back... all 2.5 miles of it. Garrett and I laugh now about our surprise 5-mile hike but we would do it over again... just more prepared next time!
When we went on the trail we loved how clean the air was and how pretty it was with the fall colors and views we got to experience. Abrams Falls is a great hiking trail for those that purely enjoy the outdoors! Garrett and I saw wildlife (no bears), nature, other waterways, and beautiful fall colors. I highly recommend this trail to all my hikers out there!
